City of Fort Myers Located on the south bank of the Caloosahatchee, Fort Myers has been home to soldiers, ranchers, cowboys, snowbirds and inventors. Named after Col. Abraham Myers, Fort Myers was founded in 1850 as a military outpost during the Seminole Wars. The Fort saw service again as a Union outpost during the Civil War and was officially retired from military service in 1865. Almost immediately the abandoned Fort Myers became home to settler families, land speculators and Florida Crackers (our cowboys and cowgirls).

By 1885, the Town of Fort Myers was established, the Fort Myers Press was printing and world famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison called Fort Myers his winter home. During this period Fort Myers became the county seat of the newly formed Lee County and tourism boomed as offshore tarpon fishing enticed sport fishermen and adventurers from around the world. Fort Myers saw amazing growth through the 1920s until the combination of a failing real estate market and crashing stock market sent Fort Myers into depression.

During this time Fort Myers was aided through federal works projects that changed the face of downtown. The new Federal Post Office building, the Edison Bridge and the Yacht Basin all made significant improvements to the struggling downtown. It was a return to Fort Myers' military heritage that would bring all of Southwest Florida out of depression and into prosperity. The establishment of Buckingham Field and Page Field during World War II brought thousands of service men and women to Lee County and gave local business a much need boost with government contracts and services for the two bases.

Since the 1950's Southwest Florida and Fort Myers have seen amazing growth and prosperity and have become premiere destinations for sun-seekers, investors and retirees. As we move forward to the future, Fort Myers will continue to hold post as the center of commerce, government and entertainment for the ever-growing Southwest Florida community.

Lee County Board of County Commissioners Lee County, Florida, is a political subdivision of the State of Florida governed by the State Constitution and general laws of the State of Florida. It was founded in 1887 and became a Charter County upon the enactment of its County Charter approved by the voters on November 5th, 1996 and effective as of January 1st, 1997. Lee County Transit Division (LeeTran) LeeTran is operated under the authority of Lee County Government and the Lee County Board of Commissioners. LeeTran operates 17 fixed bus routes, which last year provided nearly 2.8 million rides to residents and visitors. In addition, LeeTran provides a "Park and Ride" trolley service to and from area beaches. Polk County Board of County Commissioners As outlined in the Polk County Charter, the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) is the governing body of Polk County. Polk County Sheriff's Office is a full service law enforcement agency serving Polk County Florida. Polk County Tax Collector's Office is a Constitutional Office. It was first established by Florida's 4th Constitution in 1868. As a Constitutional Office, the Tax Collector's Office provides services as an agent of the Governor and Cabinet of the State of Florida in the following areas: Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Collection of Sales Taxes; Issuance of Disabled Person Parking Placards; Vehicle, Vessel and Mobile Home Registration and Titling; and, Distribution of Revenues to State and Local Government, Department of Revenue, Collection and Distribution of Ad Valorem Taxes (Real and Tangible Property) and Non-Ad Valorem Assessments, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Sale of Licenses, Monitoring of Sub Agents, and Report and Distribute Revenues to the State. In addition to working as an agent for the Governor and Cabinet, the Tax Collector may also enter into contracts for services with other governmental authorities and non-governmental entities. Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Sarasota County is located on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Our jurisdiction encompasses 572 square miles, including 35 miles of shoreline. The county is home to 387,000 residents - a number that swells to more than 500,000 residents during winter months. There are nearly 1,000 sworn and civilian employees. Personnel duties include patrol, investigations, corrections, communications, youth services, K-9, victim’s assistance, court security, animal services, aviation, mounted patrol, SWAT and crime prevention. Another 100 volunteers assist our agency in various areas.
