Citrus Connection On December 2, 1982 the first district operated bus pulled out of the downtown Citrus Connection depot. City of Fort Myers Located on the south bank of the Caloosahatchee, Fort Myers has been home to soldiers, ranchers, cowboys, snowbirds and inventors. Named after Col. Abraham Myers, Fort Myers was founded in 1850 as a military outpost during the Seminole Wars. The Fort saw service again as a Union outpost during the Civil War and was officially retired from military service in 1865. Almost immediately the abandoned Fort Myers became home to settler families, land speculators and Florida Crackers (our cowboys and cowgirls).

By 1885, the Town of Fort Myers was established, the Fort Myers Press was printing and world famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison called Fort Myers his winter home. During this period Fort Myers became the county seat of the newly formed Lee County and tourism boomed as offshore tarpon fishing enticed sport fishermen and adventurers from around the world. Fort Myers saw amazing growth through the 1920s until the combination of a failing real estate market and crashing stock market sent Fort Myers into depression.

During this time Fort Myers was aided through federal works projects that changed the face of downtown. The new Federal Post Office building, the Edison Bridge and the Yacht Basin all made significant improvements to the struggling downtown. It was a return to Fort Myers' military heritage that would bring all of Southwest Florida out of depression and into prosperity. The establishment of Buckingham Field and Page Field during World War II brought thousands of service men and women to Lee County and gave local business a much need boost with government contracts and services for the two bases.

Since the 1950's Southwest Florida and Fort Myers have seen amazing growth and prosperity and have become premiere destinations for sun-seekers, investors and retirees. As we move forward to the future, Fort Myers will continue to hold post as the center of commerce, government and entertainment for the ever-growing Southwest Florida community.

Lee County Board of County Commissioners Lee County, Florida, is a political subdivision of the State of Florida governed by the State Constitution and general laws of the State of Florida. It was founded in 1887 and became a Charter County upon the enactment of its County Charter approved by the voters on November 5th, 1996 and effective as of January 1st, 1997. Polk County Sheriff's Office is a full service law enforcement agency serving Polk County Florida. Polk County is the fourth largest county in the state with 2,010.2 total square miles, 1,874.9 square miles of which is land area. The Sheriff is an independent constitutional officer and by function is statutorily charged with the responsibility of providing all primary law enforcement services within Polk County. Collier County Department of Alternative Transportation Modes The Alternative Transportation Modes (ATM) Department oversees the public transit system, Collier Area Transit (CAT), and the Transportation Disadvantaged System (TD). Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida In 1952, Goodwill was brought to St. Petersburg, by a local resident, who was concerned about people with disabilities in the community. It was called Goodwill-Suncoast and it grew to be the largest Goodwill in the world, with branches in Tallahassee, Orlando, Jacksonville, Sarasota, Lakeland, and Fort Myers. The first Goodwill outlet in Southwest Florida was a store, which opened in Fort Myers in 1959. By 1966, several local businessmen, led by Fort Myers News-Press editor, Chesley Perry, had rallied to the Goodwill cause.

Polk County Transit Services Polk County Transit Services coordinates door-to-door and fixed-route transit services within the County. All vehicles are handicapped-accessible and have bike racks and child restraints. Residents of Polk County who are unable to provide for their own transportation due to age, disabling condition, or poverty may be eligible for Transportation Disadvantaged service. The Polk Board of County Commissioners is the administrator of Winter Haven Area Transit (W.H.A.T.) - a joint project with the City of Winter Haven - a successful fixed route bus service. Winter Haven Area Transit The Winter Haven Area Transit (W.H.A.T.) system is a joint effort between the Board of County Commissioners and the City of Winter Haven. The W.H.A.T. is a fixed bus route service. Some of the routes are operated by the Citrus Connection under contract to the Board of County Commissioners. All buses provide bike racks and are handicap accessible.
